PATIENTS at Sankey Medical Centre have been venting their fury after being told they will have to travel elsewhere to see a doctor.

Some residents were told the news over a text while others received letters telling them they will be automatically transferred to Park View at Orford Jubilee Park Health Centre, 4.5 miles away, when the surgery closes on February 28.

The move will affect 6,459 registered patients at the Barrowhall Lane practice with many raising concerns over how elderly patients will reach the Orford surgery and those relying on public transport.

Other residents, who have tried to register at nearby surgeries including Chapelford and Westbrook, have been told the patient lists are closed.

One reader commented: “Apparently the lease is up on the building.

“So much for caring about patients particularly those who do not have a car.”

The announcement follows planning permission being refused in February 2012 for the surgery to move to new premises on the same road.

The proposal included the relocation of the surgery to a residential bungalow opposite Great Sankey High School which led to numerous complaints from neighbours.

A spokesman for NHS England, Cheshire Warrington and Wirral said: "We are aware that concerns have been raised by some patients at Great Sankey Medical Centre about the future of the practice.
"It is our aim to address these concerns as soon as possible and we are currently working with the practice to provide further information to patients as quickly as possible.
“Our primary concern is to ensure that all patients registered at this practice continue to have access to the full range of high quality primary care services."
