SCHOOL children from across the town have been getting creative as part of a project following on from the 20th anniversary of the Warrington bombing.

A commemorative sculpture dedicated to Warrington is currently being designed to mark the tragedy and there are still opportunities for residents to be part of the lasting legacy.

With ‘peace’, ‘hope’, ‘respect’ and ‘the future’ as their inspiration, the children used their creative talents to design individual pieces of artwork, which are now on display in each school and will become the feature of an exhibition at Warrington Museum and Art gallery in March.

The art sessions were led by artists Andy and Sharon Shaw and Andy has been commissioned to use the children’s interpretations to create a sculpture that will be presented and placed in the town later this year.

The council is looking for businesses, individuals and community groups who would be interested in sponsoring the sculpture and would welcome any contributions.

Clr Mike Hannon, deputy leader, said: “In the aftermath of the 1993 bombing, children came together and created the 12 discs that form part of the River of Life memorial in Bridge Street.

“I think it is very fitting that 20 years on, the next generation plays a similar role in creating a lasting legacy for the town.

“This is something that is very dear to not only my heart but for many others here in our town and I hope that people or businesses come forward and play a role in this important, community project.”
