THE minister for culture, and sport has shown her support for Warrington Town’s ‘2020 vision’ during a visit to the football club.

The side, nicknamed The Yellows, revealed ambitious plans in the summer to break into the football league by 2020.

Maria Miller, who was joined by Warrington South MP David Mowat at Warrington’s ground in Latchford, said it was important for clubs to provide ‘real opportunities’ for youngsters to get involved with the game.

She added: “It’s clear to me football in Warrington is such an important sport with really high participation and this club has got a great plan for making sure this continues.

“It’s clearly something the directors feel is very achievable and making sure youth teams are able to flourish and youngsters are able to have that opportunity to get involved and make sport a habit for life.

“It’s something David (Mowat) has raised with me several times in the House of Commons and making sure the legacy is there and football participation is supported.

“We want to make sure youngsters get the sporting habit at a very young age and established before they move into secondary school.

“We have a billion pound sporting strategy for England focused on grass roots participation which is a great legacy from the Olympics.”

Mrs Miller also discussed broadband in the town after long delays for residents in Chapelford to be linked up with high-speed internet.

She added: “We have got very well-developed plans to have 90 per cent of houses in the UK linking up to super fast broadband.

“It’s an important investment from the Government to make sure we do see significant increases in the number of houses which can make such a difference whether it’s children being able to do homework, people working from home and businesses.”
