Bridge Street work complete - with a continental feel

First published in News
Last updated

WORK to transform lower Bridge Street is complete - with German trees and Italian planters.

The rennovation of the street started in September and has seen the pavements and road relaid, a new shape put into the road and planters put in.

The trees, conifers, weere carefully selected to minimise any impact on CCTV, reduce maintenance and survive in a British climate according to council officers.

They were bought for Germany as they were the nearest place selling this style of conifer.

The planters, themselves, made in Italy, were bought from Marshalls in the UK.

It makes me wonder what people think a 'continental feel' suggests. I don't think you could ever turn Bridge Street into Unter Den Linden, but you'd expect more than some planters and sorting the paving out in front of the kebab shops. Time for the council to start addressing the real problems why the town centre is so unattractive to people.

Incidentally, I saw over Christmas that there were banners up in Stockton Heath telling people the parking charges aren't all that much really and they should ignore places like The Trafford Centre to go shopping in Stockton Heath instead. Remarkable nonsense from whoever was responsible.

I never saw any banners saying that in Stockton Heath at xmas and no way can anyone compare Stockton Heath with all it's pubs, bars, takeaways, charity shops and very FEW propper retail shops as being anything like The Trafford Centre or even Widnes or Runcorn shopping place where it's free parking.

The bottom of Bridge Street looks nicer now in the pics but I'd forgotten what it looked like before anyway so good job they put the before pics too.

All they need to do now is sort the scruffy and tacky shop and bar fronts out down the whole of the street and get some traders to take up all the empty shops too. Not so easy though with the high rent and rates, traffic congestion and lack of parking ;)

Why didn't they plant some of the green shoots - reported in today's WW - that are springing up in and around Warrington? They would have been cheaper, home grown and would not have had to travel all the way from Germany.

Quite right. All they've done is put lipstick on a gorilla in a bid to convince people it's Scarlett Johansson.

Only positive I see is Bridge Street now has some extra large ashtrays to help keep the floor tidy.

Bridge St. does look nice now, but did that planners realise that it is a bus route into and out of the town. Two buses have difficulty passing, and as for the bends !!! I believe the planters cost £10.000 each, after they were unwrapped and planted, this last weekend they have been uses as Pizza dumps, vomit bins, cigarette butt bins and urinals. Brilliant idea WBC. Oh and of course the pavement gets slippy when wet.

They should have opened up the town centre for through traffic and put the bus stops back in order to encourage more traders to make a reasonable living. It may also have the added benefit of easing congestion at bridge foot especially for local traffic.

Shoppers and traders need to be considered more with any further access and "Improvements" that are under consideration, and not pie-in-the-sky, day dreaming Borough Councillors,

No doubt that the street scape will change again in the near future.
