A FORMER police officer with Cheshire Police has been awarded the Queen’s Police Medal.

Garry Shewan, now assistant chief constable at Greater Manchester Police, was named in the New Year’s Honours list.

ACC Shewan said: “I have been very proud to have served in both Cheshire Constabulary and Greater Manchester Police for the last 26 years.

“During that time I have had to deal with some of the most challenging events that any police officer may have to deal with.

“I would like to thank the police authorities of both forces, as well as the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner, but above all the officers and staff who have worked with me to provide a neighbourhood policing service which is focused on understanding the needs of communities and victims better, and has been reducing the crimes that cause the most harm.”

Meanwhile former rugby league referee Stuart Cummings has been awarded an MBE.

The ex Warrington Cricket Club man, from Widnes, stood down from his role at match officials director in March.

And rugby league was also the key for Martin Coyd to be given the OBE.

His career began on Bank Park under the tuition of Wolves legend Jim Challinor and the former Stockton Heath resident has now been honoured.

Martin, who now lives in Gillingham, is a rugby league coach in Medway and coach of the England wheelchair rugby league side.

International pianist Stephen Hough, a former pupil at Thelwall County, has been awarded a CBE.

The celebrated musician is a regular at the Live at St Wilfrid's concert series in Grappenhall.
