POLICE say there has been a large increase in people needlessly reported missing in the town.

According to officers, people are being reported missing only minutes after they are supposed to be home from a night out.

Police investigate to find a mobile phone has been turned off, or the person is running late.

On other occasions that person is staying out for the night but has not informed friends, partner or relatives.

Figures show that 25 per cent of calls made to report someone missing in the last month were unnecessary, say police.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “We have had a massive increase in reported incidents for missing persons.

“In some instances the person has simply forgotten to tell loved ones that they are staying out.

“Results are officers are searching for these individuals.

“We want people to keep in touch with loved ones and let people know if you're not going to come home.”
