EMERGENCY crews were called to help a 30-year-old man who had fallen into the Mersey last night.
Witnesses described the man sat on the bridge near Riverside Retail Park in the town centre before he plunged into the icy cold water at 12.30am.
One onlooker said firefighters in a boat quickly rushed to the man’s aid and pulled him out of the water on the banks of the river near Marshall Gardens.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution but a North West Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed he had no obvious injuries.
