Warrington Guardian: Council tackles Facebook fraudsters Council tackles Facebook fraudsters

A FACEBOOK fraud campaign has been heralded as a success since it was launched in November.

A report conducted by Warrington and Halton Trading Standards has identified a number of sites selling counterfeit goods.

Four accounts selling illegal tobacco goods, 28 individuals selling sites selling counterfeit goods and 32 buy-and-sell accounts have been uncovered as taking part in illegal activity.

Trading standards officers are also liaising with Facebook to take down 21 offending accounts with immediate effect.

Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for public protection, Clr David Keane, said: “Our officers have done a good job in tracking down a number of Facebook fraudsters.

“During coming weeks, those selling small volumes will receive warnings which we hope will deter them from further illicit activity.

“Other illegal sellers will be receiving a visit from police and trading standards officers.”

Anyone caught selling counterfeit good could receive a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

To report counterfeit goods call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
