Former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95.

In a televised address, the country’s President Jacob Zuma announced the death yesterday of the man dubbed the unofficial President of the World.

Mr Zuma said: “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.

“What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves.”

Mr Mandela had suffered from a series of lung infections over the past two years and died at home in the company of his family.

The anti-apartheid hero spent 27 years in jail before becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994.

His name became synonymous around the world with the struggle for justice against tyranny and oppression.
