LIBERAL Democrats in Warrington are calling on the council to improve the state of street signs.

Deputy Lib Dem group leader Clr Bob Barr brought a motion to the full council meeting on Monday asking for work to be done to tackle dirty signs.

Clr Barr (LD - Lymm) said: “In a time of austerity, signage may seem a minor concern compared to the plight of the disabled and other pressing welfare issues.

“But as budgets continue to tighten, we need to ensure that the council’s apparently minor responsibilities don’t fall by the wayside.

“One such responsibility is our duty to maintain signage on the highways including street nameplates, warning signs and local direction signs. The cities and towns that we are competing with for good jobs and prosperous businesses do better than us.

“Signage repairs and maintenance can also provide training and work opportunities for those looking for a pathway back into work.

“It can be training that includes administrative processes, procurement, health and safety, basic fitting, electrical work and leadership. “Surely there are funds available, backed up with apprenticeship money from the government, to deal with this highly visible and important aspect of our street scene.”

The meeting voted for the matter to be considered further.
