LIVEWIRE’S Stop Smoking Team has bucked the national trend after topping the charts for helping the highest number of people to quit.

According to recent findings in the National Report for Smoking, Warrington is leading the country in stopping smoking with the highest percentage of successful quit rates nationally.

Councillor Kate Hannon, executive member for culture communities and leisure, said: “This is fantastic news. Once again Warrington is leading the way.”

During the past 12 months, 1,536 people using LiveWire’s stop smoking service set a quit date, of which 1,204 were successful.

This resulted in a 78.4 per cent success rate compared to a national success rate of 51.6 per cent and a regional success rate of 47.6 per cent.

In spite of Warrington’s success, nationally, there has been an overall decrease of 11 per cent in people setting a quit date in the past 12 months and then successfully quitting.

This is the first time since a study was carried out in 2008 to 2009 that the percentage of quitters has dropped.

Stop smoking co-ordinator Dani Ramsey said: “People are four times more likely to succeed in quitting smoking if they come and get support from us.

“Sometimes you just need another person’s viewpoint. It is the support and motivation that we can provide, which will make a big difference.”

The stop smoking advisors are determined to stay ahead of the crowd and to continue to lead to way in terms of successful quit rates.

Dani added: “We are always looking to achieve more and hope to continue to encourage more people to quit in Warrington in the future.”
