POLICE and council bosses have teamed up to launch a campaign aimed at encouraging revellers to look after themselves when celebrating over the festive season.

‘Stay Safe’ is a Warrington Borough Council initiative supported by Cheshire Police.

It will see adverts put up in the town centre, focusing on night time hotspots like Bridge Street.

They will be placed in bars, on telephone boxes and bus shelters.

The campaign was launched by the council alongside officers from Warrington Town Centre NPU at Voodoo Bar, Friars Gate, last week.

Speaking after the meeting, Clr Pat Wright, executive board member for health and wellbeing, said: “We want everyone to have a great time, and our ‘Stay Safe’ campaign focuses on making sure people are safe while they’re having fun.

“It’s common sense but it’s worth reminding people of some simple things, like making sure your mobile phone’s fully charged before you go out, and planning in advance how you’re getting home – and of course remember not to get into unmarked taxis.

“And if one of your friends has had too much to drink, take them home to make sure they’re safe.”

The campaign is also being backed by health officials in a bid to crack down on the amount of alcohol related visits to A and E.

Dr Rita Robertson, Warrington’s director of public health, said: “If we stay within our limits there’s no danger of letting too much alcohol spoil a good night out.”

The “Stay Safe” campaign has been developed by the council’s Drugs and Alcohol Action Team working with the youth service, the young people’s alcohol tea and sexual health services.

The council says bar and shop owners, and members of Pubwatch were also consulted.
