THE Bishop of Warrington says a vote in the church to support women bishops is 'fantastic'.

Rt Rev Richard Blackburn spoke out after the General Synod, which rules the church, voted in favour of women bishops by an overwhelming majority.

It comes a year after the Church of England voted against the proposal. Final approval for the move could now come into place by July.

Bishop Richard Blackburn, Bishop of Warrington and Suffragan Bishop of Liverpool said: “Synod’s vote today represents a monumental positive shift forward for the Church of England.

"I have long been a supporter of women in the episcopate and it is fantastic to have reached a point where we are one step closer to this goal.

"I know there will be many in the Diocese of Liverpool who will be rejoicing at this long overdue step and I strongly support this affirmation of women’s ministry.

"However, as we have always done in Liverpool, I will be working with colleagues and parishes who have a strong theological objection so that they still feel included in our common life as we seek to grow in Christ.

"I was struck by the positive atmosphere encouraged by people listening prayerfully and carefully together and a desire to move forward.

"What resulted was the adoption of a plain and simple measure which is widely perceived as fair and workable.

"I look forward to welcoming the first woman to the College of Bishops. “
