Naked ambition for Orford calendar girls
12:00pm Friday 25th October 2013 in News
GETTING your kit off in front of the camera is something that may leave you feeling less than enthusiastic.
But for a group of friends who want to raise money for Cancer Research, doing a naked calendar moved quickly from a funny idea to high resolution reality.
It all started when Lauren Meakin was lying in bed at her home on Orford Road.
She said: “We wanted to raise money for the charity because it’s the one thing that everyone has been affected by in some way.
“I was at home and thinking about the film Calendar Girls, and thought doing our own calendar would be a really good idea.
“When I told my friends they laughed at first but then we decided to do it.”
In the 2003 comedy starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, a Woman’s Institute’s efforts to fundraise for a local hospital creates a media frenzy.
Mum-of-four Lauren, aged 29, who organised the calendar with friend and Padgate resident Juliana Malia, said the first time stripping off was nerve-wracking.
“When we got to the photo shoot we were all terrified,” she said.
“We had our robes on and said we couldn’t do it.
“In the end it was so much fun.”
The calendar is half-finished with three further photo shoots planned at the University of Chester’s Padgate campus.
Photography student Tom Caldwell, aged 19, is snapping the pictures.
The selected charity has special meaning for Lauren, whose mother-in-law Jean Blackley is in recovery from skin cancer.
She said: “The support Jean got was brilliant and she said she couldn’t have been helped any more.
“All profits we make will go to Cancer Research.”
When finished the calendars will cost £7 - £3 will go on printing costs for each sale, and £4 to the charity.
