Wolves fans smile on despite Grand Final despair
6:00pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in News
IT was ultimately to be a day of despair - but for 20,000 Warrington Wolves fans it all started so promisingly.
The Barmy Army travelled in force to Old Trafford on Saturday for the Grand Final.
The chance to be Super League champions - a first league crown awaited in almost 60 years.
And while it was devastation folllowing the final hooter, a 30-16 defeat to arch rivals Wigan, it had been all smiles earlier in the night as the Wolves fans prepared for the second Old Trafford appearance in as many years.
Fans travelled from across the country, as far afield as the Isle of Man, Kent and Birmingham.
One, David Lomax, a former Woolston High School pupil, travelled further than most.
Now living in Melbourne, the 31-year-old made a special trip back to Manchester for the match.
He was joined by a multitude of other fans, all decked out in primrose and blue.
The Warburton family from Latchford were hoping the return of young fan Isabelle, aged four, would help bring the Wolves luck.
She missed last year’s Grand Final defeat to Leeds but had seen all three Wembley Challenge Cup triumphs in recent years - including the 2009 win as a six month old baby.
And there was plenty to keep fans entertained in the car park. Inflatable rugby and the World Cup trophy were attracting crowds.
While spotted in the VIP section was cycling legend and Wigan fan, Sir Bradley Wiggins.
FORMER Woolston Rovers half back Stephen Martin made a ‘flying visit’ from his Dubai home to watch Wolves play in the Grand Final.
“It was a great day, shame about the result,” he said.
“My trip started with a 2.30am flight from Dubai on Friday morning, spent the day with family before heading off to Manchester at 11am on Saturday when I met up with ex-Woolston Rovers colleagues!
“It was a flying visit as my flight departed at 9.30am on Sunday, getting me home just in time for work on Monday!”
