DAD founder wins National Diversity Award

THE FOUNDER of Warrington Disability Partnership was celebrating last week after winning a prestigious award at the National Diversity Awards.
Dave Thompson MBE, who launched Disability Awareness Day 22 years ago, picked up the award for Entrepreneur of Excellence Award for Disability at the Queens Hotel in Leeds.
The awards honoured the outstanding achievements of grass root communities and individuals who have contributed to making a more diverse and inclusive society.
Dave, from Old Hall, said: “I am honoured and humbled to win this award. I was absolutely speechless, which is difficult to believe for those who know me”.
Dave said the secret to a successful business was ‘team work’, which he said was key to the development of WDP, The Disability Trading Company and Disability Awareness Day.
Dave started WDP with two other members Eric James and Alan Shaw, after an accident playing American Football in July 1989, which resulted in a spinal cord injury.
Since then Dave, who became the UK’s first full time disability advisor in 1995, has spent countless hours providing support for people with disabilities as well as showing people that it’s about looking at what disabled people can do, and not what they can’t do.
The assistant director of inclusion and partnerships at 5 Boroughs paid tribute to his wife Pam and two children Gavin and Emma, friends and members of WDP both past and present.
Nick Rowe, director of corporate services said: “Dave’s commitment to improving the lives of people with mental and physical disability is second-to-none.
“Last year alone, under Dave’s leadership our equality, diversity and inclusion team created more than 2,500 opportunities for service users, carers and volunteers to get involved at this Trust.
“As an organisation, we congratulate him on this well-deserved national recognition.”
