12:00pm Thursday 3rd October 2013 in News
IT’S traditionally performed by the New Zealand rugby team in the build-up to a match to strike fear into their opponents.
But youngsters from Appleton Thorn Primary School left its audience with smiles on their faces rather than a feeling of terror after they performed the iconic dance on Wednesday.
All year groups from the school on Arley Lane joined in with the dance lesson where they learnt the moves which included loud chanting, foot stomping and arm waving.
Head teacher, Craig Burgess, moved to the UK from New Zealand in March 1994 and was delighted to be given the opportunity to share some of his country’s heritage with the pupils.
Mr Burgess said: “With the New Zealand v Samoa Rugby League World Cup match taking place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, it was the perfect time to teach them the haka.
“I have done it with a couple of classes before but never the full school. It’s was great fun and they picked it up really quickly.”
“We taught them about the history of the haka and explained about New Zealand playing in the Rugby League World Cup. They all seemed excited about it.”
The match will take place on October 27 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
