Updated: Power lines close road in Winwick
10:17pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
POWER lines have come down in Winwick - closing a road and leaving homes without power.
Residents reported three loud noises earlier this evening, Tuesday, followed by a power cut. They realised the power cables had come down.
The A49 at Newton Road has been closed between its junction with Hollins Lane and Hermitage Green Lane.
One resident said: "There was a bang and the lights went out, I was outside and there were three more explosions which lit up the night sky, all very dramatic stuff.
"We ran up the lane and saw the lines were down across the road, cars were still trying to pass and one car caught the power cables and there was a further flash as it made contact, we realised the lines were live and tried to stop the traffic but cars just ignored us.
"We then went up Old Schoolhouse lane and saw that one of the poles had fallen over narrowly missing the energy van that had been called out earlier when the post had been reported swaying."
Work has now been completed at the site.
A spokesman from Scottish Power apologised to residents and said the power cut had affected nearly 100 homes and was due to a fault in the overhead network and a problem with a pole holding a conductor.
Engineers worked through the night to fix the problem which meant power had to be turned on and off several times between the hours of 9pm and 5am
