Police called to traveller row in Risley
6:00am Friday 27th September 2013 in News
POLICE were called to a pub brawl between two traveller families in Risley.
Staff at the Noggin Inn on Warrington Road claim a fight on Sunday night involved travellers with people fighting in the street.
Cheshire Police confirmed the incident on Twitter on Sunday and said officers were called to reports of a fight in a pub involving several drunk people.
The confrontation comes after travellers again settled on Silver Lane despite being twice evicted from the site last year.
Numerous caravans and trailers are currently parked there, prompting an angry reaction from residents.
David Brooks, of Cross Lane South, said there are now ‘more than ever before’ on land off Silver Lane.
He said: “Once again they are parked completely on the single footpath, forcing pedestrians into the road.
“In the past 13 years I have reported numerous traveller camps to the council and their response has been poor.
“The travellers are parked blocking the footpath on a public road, something which if one of the council tax paying public undertook, then we would be dealt with.
“I was not anti-traveller when I purchased my house but I have no time for them now.”
Travellers were ordered to leave the site in April 2012 after Warrington Borough Council secured a court order to move them.
Five months later they returned, with the council evicting them again in October last year.
Police say they are working with the council to address the issue.
Insp Chris Adkins, of Warrington East Npu, said: “We are aware that travellers have moved onto land in Silver Lane in Risley.
“We are working alongside the council to find a solution to the situation as quickly as possible.”
