Climbing a mountain for Steve Prescott
7:53am Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
“I WOULD recommend anyone doing it but not in five days.”
Those are the worldy wise words of Ade Cunliffe who climbed to the top of Mount Kilimajaro in five days - the quickest time you are allowed to make the ascent.
He was part of a team of 12 who tackled the gruelling challenge to help raise money for the Steve Prescott Foundation.
The 39-year-old was told before going up they stood only a 30 per cent chance of completing their task.
But all of them made it - after having to overcome severe altitiude sickness.
Ade, of Lincoln Close, Woolston, said: “On the day of the summit we left at 12.30am and by 3am I had severe altitude sickness. I lost my speech, suffered swollen lips and blurred vision.
“I though I was replying to people's questions but I wasn't - I was just making noises. We all had headaches and nose bleeds.
“The guides said we wouldn't have been suffering so bad if we had acclimatisation days.
“In five days you have no time to get your body acclimatised so it was a case of walking as slow as possible. It was almost like comedy walking.”
What drove on Saints fan Ade was the thought of who he was helping out by completing the challenge.
The computer consultant went to college with the former Saints player and has done charity events for his foundation before.
But this was the toughest.
“We all made it,” he added. “The guide said the reason we got there was because the one person we were there for was Steve Prescott.
“They admitted a few people shouldn't have gone up and if it was just personal reasons for the climb rather than charity they wouldn't have been allowed.
“We were going delirious on the way to the summit but there were tears of happiness when we got to the top, It was the most toughest and most physical challenge I have done.”
Ade has managed to raise more than £4,000 so far but if you would like to donate visit justgiving.com/Ade-Cunliffe.
