Pair jailed after being caught with illegal tobacco

TWO men caught with illegal tobacco in Warrington have been jailed.
Steven McElroy, aged 53, from Denton, and Aleksandr Baikovskij, aged 32, from Salford were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday.
Both defendants were arrested in the town in January with 153 kgs of illegal cigarettes and tobacco.
HM Revenue and Customs officers found further stashes of 151,110 cigarettes and 61.8Kgs in tobacco in Manchester.
Cash to the tune of £7,590 was also seized hidden in a nappy bag in McElroy’s home, and £27,390 was recovered from Baikovskij’s home.
McElroy pleaded guilty to three offences of fraud and was jailed for 26 months.
Baikovskij pleaded guilty to one count of fraud and was jailed for 40 weeks.
The seized cash totalling £34,980 will be subject to a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing.
