Councillors back fuel poverty campaign
6:00am Monday 16th September 2013 in News
COUNCILLORS added their support to a campaign calling on the Government to help tackle fuel poverty.
Clr David Keane and Clr Tony Higgins put forward the plans which ask the Government to spend money raised through carbon taxes on making homes more energy efficient.
There was wide support for the motion from all parties who agreed more should be done to help with things like insulation and reducing energy prices.
Clr Higgins (LAB - Fairfield and Howley) spoke of how fuel poverty was worrying many of his constituents.
He said: “The Coalition Government is raking in billions of pounds a year from carbon fuel taxes and then uses that revenue to shore up their failing economic policies when really this money should be being used to bring down household fuel bills and start to get people like my ward members out of fuel poverty ,this is clearly not happening and supporting this campaign will hopefully start to get a message across to this government that fuel poverty can cost lives.”
