Warrington MP warns of effect on town's charities with new lobbying bill

ST ROCCO’S Hospice could have its voice silenced by the Coalition Government says a Labour MP.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones has revealed that the government’s lobbying bill will hit the charity by making it difficult for the hospice to hold the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats responsible for their records, to campaign against their policies and to prove how these policies have a damaging effect on the town’s people.
The Mp added that the hospice might not be able to enter a campaign coalition with other charities because its full cost will have to be counted in their expenditure. The ‘choose charity shops week’ that Ms Jones was associated with would not have the same positive impact under the new lobbying bill.
The MP said: “Local charities such as St Rocco’s do so much for the people in Warrington- we’ve already seen how important their work is.
“The bill amounts to a gag on charities and campaigners and is a desperate attempt by the Government to prevent their record and policies from being criticised and scrutinised at a local level.”
