Police issue warning following heavy rain
10:54am Friday 6th September 2013 in News
DRIVERS have been warned to take care on the roads following heavy rain in Warrington overnight.
The Met Office is predicting the wet weather will continue today and police have issued advice to motorists.
Sgt Rick Weaver, from Cheshire′s Roads Policing Unit, said: "Roads are at their most slippery and dangerous when it rains following a long dry spell.
"That is because dust, oil and diesel deposits build up on the road surface and then mixes with the rain water."
Further rain is expected throughout today and into the weekend.
Advice to drivers:
1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. Stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads.
2. If the steering becomes unresponsive it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road surface, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.
3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
4. Keep your lights and windscreen clean.
