More than 100 assaults on police officers in town
8:00am Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
MORE than 100 police officers were assaulted while on duty in the town over the last 18 months.
A Freedom of Information request by the Warrington Guardian has revealed that 115 policemen and women were victim to an assault between January 2011 and July 2013.
The Police Federation said the amount of officers being attacked is likely to be much higher.
Simon Roberts, chairman of Cheshire Police Federation, said: “The figure doesn’t surprise me at all.
“Assaults are probably under reported because quite a few go under the radar.
“We encourage officers to report assaults so that the true picture is revealed.
“One assault is unacceptable but we see people when they are at their worst.
“It is a dangerous job and this is part and parcel of that job.
“It shouldn’t be that way, but it is.”
Figures obtained by the FOI show 48 female officers and 67 male officers were assaulted.
The incidents resulted in 21 cautions being handed out, while 81 suspects were charged.
Mr Roberts believes that many assaults on officers happen when suspects have been drinking.
The town centre was the hotspot for incidents, with 38 recorded.
John Dwyer, Police and Crime Commisioner for Cheshire, said: “The police are doing a great job protecting us from the aggressive actions of some mindless idiots who cause us problems.
“Sadly this brings them into contact with these individuals and, as can be expected, some of those contacts result in assaults.
“They are relatively small in number when you consider the volume of such contacts taking place but they should be a matter of concern for all of us.
“The constabulary does everything it can to minimise these assaults and provides all the necessary training and equipment for the benefit of its officers.
“Nonetheless it must be acknowledged that policing is a dangerous job and the majority of the public, and I include myself in this, admire the bravery and dedication of officers who go out there every day to make life safer for us.”
