Officers hit the saddle in memory of fallen colleagues
1:00pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in News
A TEAM of police have cycled 130 miles in 12 hours in memory of three fallen Warrington officers.
The bike ride took in all 18 police stations in Cheshire with more than £1,500 raised so far, beating the target of £1000.
COPS, a charity that supports families of officers who have died, is getting the cash.
Sgt Graham Robinson, of Warrington Twon Centre NPU, said: “COPS have been massively involved in supporting families of fallen colleagues, of which from the north of the county there are three officers known to most, if not all, the riders − PC Jon Speakman, PC Kevin Brinksman and PC Simon Dean.
"Myself and the other riders are all keen cyclists and it seemed like a good, difficult challenge to raise money."
"The overwhelming sense of achievement felt great and having done it all in support of a great charity, made the satisfaction even greater.”
PC Kevin Brinkman, served with the community action team in Warrington.
He was killed in a road accident on March 29, 2005, aged 33, while seconded to Thailand to provde aid in the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami.
PC Jon Speakman, died on Jan 29, 2005, also aged 33.
He was on holiday in Australia and drowned while trying to save a child.
PC Simon Dean, who also policed in the town, died in a road accident, aged 33, on May 24, 2009.
The bike ride was completed with all three officers in mind but it was not without drama.
It began at Cheshire Police headquarters in Winsford on Wednesday, August 28, with Ass Chf Con Jeanette McCormick taking part in the first leg.
A crash, flat tyre and unnecessary 10 mile diversion threatened to delay proceedings before the team of ten bikers finished at Stockton Heath Police Station.
Graham added: "Although the pace was still high we were going to struggle with light if we didn′t get a move on.
"The last leg was by far the most satisfying. Riding up Victoria Road all together into Stockton Heath police station felt amazing."
