Charity night means more to Donna than most people
12:00pm Friday 6th September 2013 in News
“I WAS, and still am in shock to be honest. You hear of these things happening but never imagine it to actually happen to you.”
The words of Donna Randles, aged 38, from Great Sankey, who has battled with squamous carcinoma – a rare form of cancer, this year.
Statistics have shown that only around one in 12,000 women suffer from this type of cancer, most of which are over the age of 65.
In October last year, Donna was undergoing treatment for an unrelated illness when a new nurse noticed some concerning symptoms. A biopsy was then carried out where pre-cancer cells were found.
Donna was referred to St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester where she had an operation to remove the pre-cancerous cells. However, when the cells were tested again, her worst nightmare was realised as she was diagnosed with the disease.
Donna underwent a major operation in June to remove the cells and also to remove lymph nodes in her groin as a precaution. The surgery was a success and things are looking up as she is now in remission.
She said: “I couldn’t have asked for better support – it really hit my family hard but they have been fantastic. The continuing support of Macmillan Cancer Support has also helped me greatly; the news mentally destroys you at first but their daily check-ups have been brilliant.”
She is now looking to transform a tough 12 months into a positive event and help Macmillan in the process.
A family fun race night will take place on Friday, October 18 at The Maltings Pub, Old Hall from 7.30pm until 11pm. Tickets cost £5 per person.
Her nine-year-old son Jack Randles-Henshaw will be supporting the night held at his local rugby club at Crosfields along with his sister – 16-year-old Chloe. Guests can also look forward to a raffle, buffet and DJ as well as a guest appearance from rock ’n’ roll band Wire County.
Tickets can be purchased on the Wire County website wirecounty.co.uk or call Donna on 07583408629.
