PRISONERS at HMP Risley Prison have achieved a bronze award for taking part in the Six Book Challenge.

The prison on Warrington Road is one of only ten prisons nationally to accomplish this.

LiveWire Librarian, Sharon Sinnott, who is based at HMP Risley, has helped to run a national scheme organised by The Reading Agency, which challenges adult readers to read six books in six months.

The Library at HMP Risley ran the challenge this year and saw 57 prisoners complete the challenge achieving a 66 per cent completion rate.

Sharon said: “Although the scheme is in its sixth year nationally, it ran for the first time at Risley last year when 16 prisoners read six books in six months.

“It was wonderful to see so many taking up and completing the Challenge this year.”

It is claimed that by running the scheme in prisons, it helps to engage people in the enjoyment of reading and develop skills to support resettlement and employment.
