From customer to landlord at the Blackburne Arms
3:00pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
SITTING in the first pub he ever stepped foot into, Mark Moran can’t quite believe how the past thirty years have panned out.
The 38-year-old from Orford has recently stepped up to the bar at the Blackburne Arms as the new landlord - the first pub he ever visited.
“I was nine years old,” laughed Mark. “Don’t worry - I wasn’t trying to get served. There was a five-a-side football pitch outside where I used to play.
“I used to come here quite a lot to play football or with my family as well - the pub was such a big part of the community.”
Mark, who is the founder of IT company Aarksman System Solutions, claims he was practically given the keys to the front door after he managed to control a heated argument at the pub on Orford Green.
The father of four said: “I was actually working there as a contractor when I heard raised voices and people arguing.
“A pub is at the heart of the community and it’s a family place. That kind of behaviour is just not acceptable at the pub so I told them so.”
Little did Mark know that one of the men was the area manager for the pub.
“He took me outside,” laughed Mark. “I thought he wanted a fight but I was wrong.
“He told me that he had never met someone so ‘loyal, supportive and concerned’ about the pub and asked me there and then if I wanted to be the landlord.”
Since that day, Mark has dedicated his time to returning the pubs to its glory days with the help of his wife, Louise.
Mark said: “It has all been a big learning curve and a lot of hard work. When we were first trying to get the pub open, I think I only had thirty hours sleep over 21 days.
“But I couldn’t have done it without all the old and new staff.”
