Losing her hair to help others
5:00pm Thursday 8th August 2013 in News
FACED with losing her hair after suffering a series of anaphylactic reactions Tasha Coates decided to turn her predicament into a force for good and help others.
The 18-year-old from Appleton had started to find her long locks falling out after suffering the serious reactions over space of two months.
So Tasha decided to take the plunge and shave off her hair and donate it to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children who lose their hair through cancer treatment.
Tasha said: I decided to shave my hair off because due to my recent change in heath, it was going to all fall out anyway. All the physical stress of the reactions caused it to fall out because there hasn't been enough time for my body to recover in between each reaction.
“So before it did I shaved it off and gave it to the Little Princess Trust so then, at least someone else can benefit from it.
“I remember Jessie J shaving her hair off for Comic Relief so I looked online for what she did with it and found out there.
“I did it so some little girl out there can feel confident without having to worry about not having any hair.”
Tasha, who is on a gap year from studying, is now waiting for doctors to discover what is causing her condition, which started less than a year ago.
But she is getting used to her new cropped hair look.
“It took a while for my family and friends to get used to it but everyone says it suits me,” she added. “When I posted it on Facebook the picture got loads of shares and I was overwhelmed with kind messages, even from people I don't know.
“Some people do stare at me or make rude comments when I am out but I just take it in my stride - I have no hair but I don't care.
“I do save a lot of time having short hair, it's dry within two minutes of getting out of the shower, it's great.
“Although all the money I save on hair care products goes on headbands and bandanas, I seem to be gathering quite a collection!”
