THE Irish Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Sunday.

Based on Orford Lane, members will be marching in a parade into the town centre on St Patrick’s Day.

They will lay a wreath at the River of Life memorial in respect to the victims of the 1993 IRA bomb.

Tracey Dolan, aged 44, of Manchester Road is secretary of the Irish Club.

Sister Mandy Cassidy is bar manager, and parents Shuirley and John McCarthy are former residents and stewards.

Tracey has been involved with it all her life, and says meeting husband Peter when working on the bar in 1995 is her favourite memory.

She said: “We are a big family at this club.

“Pensioners come in to meet and if one of them doesn’t turn up we go round to see if they’re ok.

“We do lunch clubs and lots for the community - it’s about us all looking after each other.”

The celebration on Sunday will start with Mass at the Irish Club, with Mayor Clr Steve Wright attending.

At 10.30am the parade will then head into the town centre, before returning to the club for music and food.
