FIRE chiefs are urging residents to be vigilant after a spate of fires involving wheelie bins.

Crews were called to nine incidents in February on Wellfield Street, Cromwell Road, Evelyn Street, Waterways, Greenalls Avenue and Morris Avenue with many of the blazes believed to be started deliberately.

Stuart Devereux, Warrington station manager, said: "We really would like people to be on their guard and report anyone they see lighting fires.

“This sort of crime is extremely dangerous and any fire puts the lives of the public and firefighters at considerable risk.”

Firefighters and fire investigation teams are currently working with police to investigate and are encouraging homeowners and businesses to stop rubbish from piling up next to buildings.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or Cheshire Police on 101.
