ONE mum in particular has a number of reasons to celebrate Mother’s Day this year.
Our courageous Warrington Guardian blogger Melanie O’Neill is currently clear of cancer after an operation proved a success against the odds.
Mel, who is throwing a fundraising Rainbow Ball and celebrates her 39th birthday this weekend, is now looking forward to enjoying a roast on Sunday with her two daughters, mum Val Chilton and mother-in-law June O’Neill without talking about cancer.
She said: “I can’t actually believe it now because it’s been going on for so long but I don’t want to get too excited.
“The longer I’m cancer free, the more hope I have because I’ve been told if it’s going to come back it will be quickly.
“Since I’ve told my two girls I’m better they keep talking about it and telling me ‘I’m so happy you’ve not got cancer anymore mum’.”
More than 2,600 people read Penketh salon owner Mel’s blog before she headed for the operation last month and since then she has had messages from Australia and numerous friend requests on Facebook from readers.
The mum to Barrow Hall Lane Primary School pupils Lois, aged seven and Darcey, aged six, said she can not believe the response she has had and is considering writing a book.
Mel, who saw famous spiritual healer John of God in Brazil before the op, said: “It feels like I have suddenly got lots of time on my hands hopefully now as I have spent the last two years searching for something that would help me.
“I’ve learnt so much and I’ve had people asking me for advice but the only thing I can do is tell them how I handled it.
“I wanted to do everything I could to live and would cry myself to sleep but I never gave up looking for something that would make me better and if it comes back again I will have the same attitude and find something else to try and help me get better.”
