Plans for new life at Fordton to be discussed

Fordton being demolished Fordton being demolished

PLANS for a supermarket, shops and pub on the former Fordton Leisure Centre site will be discussed by councillors next week.

The leisure centre, off Winwick Road, closed last year when the new Orford Park facility opened.

Now plans for a widescale development of the empty site are set to be discussed by Warrington Borough Council’s development management committee.

The proposal includes the supermarket, two shops, a pub/restaurant and a drive through coffee shop and will be debated on Thursday in the Parr Hall.

Three neighbours have complained saying the development would lead to far greater traffic problems than the previous leisure centre.

Planning officers have recommended that the application be approved.

wow.... you think there was more traffic going to a decrepit old swimming baths with a pool that was only open to the general public for normal family swimming just a few hours a week than there would be for a supermarket, two shops, a pub and a DRIVE through coffee shop.....

blimey....!!! if Andy Farral ever resigns from the planning position he holds I'd send off your CV, your a shoe in with that kind of planning sense......

oh and all this great... its jobs for the community ....how long before this supermarket foces the closeur of the Coop on Cotswold Rd with staff there posibly losing their jobs ??

Perhaps more objections would have been received if the council hadn't treated it as a state secret. They don't trust us to vote on the council tax (keeping the increase just below the limit for a referendum) and won't let us know what is being planned in our town on what was publicly owned land. How much the officers are in charge at the council is debatable - what is clear is that the views of the people don't matter to the Labour junta.

Not too surprising from a party whose local Youth Wing protested against the possibility of a referendum on the EU - not even in support of a yes vote, but about the prospect of us plebs having our say.

Do they realy need another pub in the area you have, the poplars, the winwick quay pub, the Toby carrvery,
The Blackburn arms and even one in L.A bowl,

Don't think they need another put a nice cafe there instead.

State secret? It must be one of the worst kept secrets of all time. It was plastered all over the WG at the time they were demolishing Fordton

I am not referring to the demolition (not even the politburo in the town Hall could have hoped to keep that secret) When they were going through the process of selling off public property , we were not allowed to know who was proposing what for the site. The values of the bid may well be commercially sensitive but not the nature of prospective developers plans, with council support for these plans apparently a pre-condition of any sale.

Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

The blackburn arms is a long way from this site, Maybe you meant the poplars pub just around the corner,
As for a drive through coffee shop the mind boggles,
Anyway you shouldn,t drink and drive,
We have known about these plans for months so its been no secret,
The Spa brook however is rumoured to be turned into police detention cells, Dont take that as gospel..

and putting ANOTHER pub on an A road, which wont have too much of a local market will do wonders for the anti drink-drive campaigns... NOT

sums up the planners though... in this climate pub after pub after pub is having to close, I know.... lets build a pub.

it is really good seeing them using their imagination

This really is old news. The council announced the plans were available to view and invited objections months ago. There was nothing hidden about this at all. It has been in the public domain for ages so why are some people weeping and wailing now? This part of Warrington is in desperate need of some quality shopping area as the ones we have are so run down mostly the are a disgrace to the area. We need to upgrade this area and this development can only be a good thing

The whole process of selling off this publicly owned land (including the nature , not just the size of the bids) were very much shrouded in mystery by thus council who seem determined not to be transparent in their dealings.

Sorry but as far as I am aware it has been very easy to find out the details that you say were shrouded in mystery. I am not a supporter of this council but this deal has not been hidden at all and has been publicised both in the WG and in several public notices and the plans have been available for inspection both in person and on the internet. Again I say this is a much needed development in an area that really needs it. I can see this becoming a travellers site very soon if development is delayed for too long and how many people would want that?

Go on then, enlighten me - what were the alternative plans for this parcel of publicly owned land - not the details of the successful bidder.

You won't know because they were kept secret, just to be clear I am NOT talking about the SUCCESFUL bid.

IIRC when it was announced that Fordton was closing and leisure facilities moving to the Hub, the only thing not know was who had aquired the site and for how much. The plans for all the bids were apparently all retail/food related (supermarket/pub/caf
e/coffeshops/ etc). The only matter that wasnt known was who and therefore what configuration.

You now what I think would be better there...a junior school !!!
Theres none for the locals that far north of long lane. maybe they could call it "Longford Juniors"

old-codger says...

That side of the road is in Orford but I know what you mean,
A school would be very well placed, Its a long walk to long lane on little legs,
St Stephens is pure Catholic and St Andrews Is full to the brim, There used to be a Longford juniors on Gough avenue many years ago before the bungalows were built.

The school was on the ford ton site wasn't it? Longford primary school. Personally I would do a ball hall/ youth centre, get the kids out doing activities,

old-codger says...

You could be right, I know a school was somwhere nearby,

If its made into a youth centre it would be council funded,
I cant see this council paying for it, Thats why they want to sell it to developers, Selling public owned property is a hoby of this council,
