Warrington Market benefits from horse meat scandal

BUTCHERS at Warrington Market are feeling the effects of the horse meat scandal.

They have seen shoppers turn their back on supermarkets to source their meat from local butchers in places like the market.

Roy Sweeney produces his own beefburgers from local meat sources and has found his customers interested in the scandal.

He believes the mixing up of different meats is happening when companies use pre-minced meat which makes it difficult to identify what meats may be in a batch.

Roy said: “In addition to having a proper audit trail of paperwork we would know by sight if a leg was from a horse - it would be a lot longer!”

All the butchers in the market are also keen to encourage customers to ask where products come from.

Plus the meat is so much nicer from the market or farm shops!

If only more people woke up to the fact that supermarkets don't give two hoots about their customers, the communities or other local businesses who's custom they hoover up in the relentless pursuit of aggressive profit.

I'm fed up of Tesco Express popping up on every street corner or vacant space at the expense of real local trades people.

its better to try new meats too, there is a game butchers in the market that does great venison, and knowing where and how the meat it sourced, certainly gives a greater confidence to the consumer.

People really need to get to the market for their meat. the quality is far superior to the supermarkets and you have a better choice, also if you want a particular cut or aren't sure there's someone right there who knows their stuff who can answer any questions.

i hope the market manager is reading all this...you know what to do, have a meat open day in the market, get plenty of samples made up, bring people in.

I have shpped in the market twice a week for almost 50 years, The meat is better quality, The fruit and veg is unbeatable The bread and cakes are delicious,Clothing is affordable and the toilets are clean, However, We must all use it or lose it, Stalls are vanishing at the speed of sound , Empty spaces tell a story, We can ignore it at our peril, because without it Warrington wouldnt be the same .

I urge everyone to shop at Asda because it's great value, friendly staff and they have plastic Scouse wannabee security guards pumped up with steroids and looking like popeye taking spinage. You can also get Donkey, greyhound, cat, pigeon meat at Asda. What a selection !

I used to buy meat & fish on a regular basis at Warrington market, Even got the fish discounted due to being a regular customer of thiers. One year we had a really hot spell during summer, and the market was sweltering, went there to buy some meat for a bbq, ended up in hospital with severe food poisoning and never went back. This was a good few years ago though, so may consider going back as when thier produce was good, it beat the supermarkets hands down.
