Green light for new lights

COUNCIL bosses have announced they will borrow money to replace 22,000 street lights in the town.

The executive board approved the work at its meeting on Monday which will see £34million be spent on replacing the lights over the next three years with energy-efficient LEDs.

Clr Linda Dirir, the council's executive board member for transport and climate change said: "This extensive replacement programme will reduce ongoing maintenance costs in the future while paying dividends in terms of reducing our carbon footprint, contributing strongly to road safety, community safety and the prevention of crime which fits neatly with the council’s strategic priorities.

“Energy costs are rising well above inflation for homeowners and businesses alike so this really is a crucial invest to save scheme for the borough.”

Council bosses say at present two thirds of Warrington's annual £2.2 million street lighting budget is spent on energy and this cost is forecast to continue to rise in the future.

More than one third of the 27,500 lights in the borough are more than 40 years old. Some 17,000 street lights are currently in need of replacement, 10,000 of which are high priority.

I can see how this would save money on energy costs, but how long would it take to re coup the costs of the change in the first place and the interest on the loan the council is taking out, and how on earth does it contribute to road safety, no one pays attention to road safety during the day, what makes you think it will make people think any differently at night, and if it is the white LED lights then am sorry but there are already some up and they make driving worse not better because if you catch the light in your eyes it can be blinding. If the council want to say they are saving money, probably so they can have more on their expenses then fair enough, but don't try and say you are doing it for our benefit because council P.R just doesn't work any more, we have all been lied to a little too much.

The energy cost would be recouped in a mere 20.48 years

@itme

That assumes the cost of electricity does not change and the cost of maintaining/replacin
g the new lights is equivalent to the existing stock.

The council is sensible to invest in bringing street lighting up to modern standards and buying in bulk will give cost savings compared to piecemeal replacement over time.
