IMPROVED conditions at court custody facilities is needed to help drive up standards, according to a prison report.

Inspectors raised concerns in Cheshire and Merseyside, including Warrington Crown Court, over excessive waits in cells, suites looking shabby and covered in graffiti and provisions for the needs of vulnerable people and minority groups not being consistent.

Nick Hardwick, chief inspector of prisons, said: “Detainees were treated with reasonable care and respect, but without the consistent management control and scrutiny which would drive up standards.

“The physical condition of the custody suites was seriously marred by graffiti and ingrained dirt.

“A start has been made on streamlining the court custody and escort process; the treatment and conditions of detainees now needs to be attended closely.”

What do they expect when they leave innocent people in cells for hours on end waiting for barristers and to get upto court room and either released or sent back to the warehouse (prison). These Inspectors must walk around with there rose tinted glasses on.

It's common sense what needs to be changed. More staff, better communication and charge people for criminal damage.

I recently went to a former prison where 18th and 19th century graffiti is one of their prized exhibits.
