Ending weekly bin collections will improve recycling rates - council says
8:00am Tuesday 19th February 2013 in News
COUNCIL bosses say ending weekly black bin collections will improve recycling rates in the town.
From April, black bin collections will move to once every other week with blue and green bins being picked up in the alternate weeks.
The town’s recycling rate currently stands at just over 43 per cent and the council has committed to raise this to at least 55 per cent by 2020 as part of its waste strategy.
Clr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “We would like to thank residents for their support and for all their recycling efforts over the last few years.
“When the waste service changes in spring we hope our brilliant recycling rate will increase even further and we want to make sure local people are preparing for the changes so if you haven’t got a blue bin, make sure you order one.”

1) I already use my blue bin and recycle wherever possible but my black bin is still full to the top every week. Where am I supposed to put the other week's rubbish?
2) Where are the savings from our council tax going to be spent?
3) Where, when and who did WBC consult with?

The rest goe,s in the black bin, The smaller bins are full in a week and larger bins are not being provided,
I can see what is going to happen and it will cost more money to sort it,
This council has had some brain dead idea,s in the past, This beats the lot.

Make the black bin bi-weekly.. Ok..
My bin is full every week, having a family of four.
My Recycle bin is full pretty much every week having a family of four.
It's bad enough I have to lift my wife into the bin to stomp it down so we can fit more in the recycling bin, that and our TWO compost bins which are also full.
Additionally recycled water...
I can't afford to have solar power installed, what more can I do???
The only thing is I'll just have to 'aquire' another black bin some how. Isn't that what you're supposed to do? I've no idea, I certainly won't be having waste festering just outside my back door where my children will be exposed to it.
This is one of the most idiotic ideas someone could come up with. Yeah, it'll cut down cost - oh wait, there is that rat problem. Oh and there is that issue with public safety. And don't forget all that waste people will be abandoning in public parks. And lets not forget people not bothering to put crap in the recycle bin when it shouldn't be..
How much will sorting that out cost?
Whichever idiot suggested this should be banned from doing anything beyond thinking.

BACON! wrote:I actually think this is a good idea, and for part there is some misconceptions on why this is happening, I would assume that the cost of the service is higher, cost of fuel, as well as the central gov funding has been slashed, something like £50m over the past 3 years, I dont think its fair blaming WBC for that . As far as consultation is concerned, this was a part of the budget consultation, I just dont think anyone actually read the document or wanted to get involved, so with that in mind, I dont think anyone has the right to complain. As I have said many times, if you think you can do better, run for office, get elected and change the world as you see fit...be a part of the solution rather than whinging on a newspapers website.
Fair enough, they have to reduce costs.

As far as the 2 weekly collection, It will be hard to get used to, but other councils have done it for some time now, and from what I can tell its working, yeah will be hard with a family of 4, but it may help you see how much is being wasted, so the up shot maybe a savings for you? maybe, maybe not.
I was in St Helens a few weeks back, and there black boxes were out for recycling, bottles and cans weren't crushed, boxes not crushed....I think they would have fitted much more in if they crushed stuff down...
Anyway, it looks like its going to happen, so maybe we embrace it and see where it goes, if it does not work out, why not approach a full council meeting and state a valid case, if they dont listen to you them, well then its time to dump rubbish on the town hall step

The community,s minister said in 2012 that weekly bin collections will stay because fortnightly collections are a health hazzard,
Now we see another one of these world famous U turns and an eerie silence from the pickle finger of fate,
I wonder what would happen if everyone failed to register a vote at the next council elections,
I,m sure one of you will enlighten me..

1) Burning material where possible in our log burner to recycle the heat value out of it (OK we release CO2 but it would release something at somepoint during disposals). Plastics were a bit of a mistake but batteries have some lovely flames. Solied nappies go well, wet nappies not so well. So that saved us about 1/5 of the black bin.
2) We already compost everything we can that is recyclable in terms of food waste. We've bought a couple more bins so we'll have four in rotation instead of two. In the early / late season we never fill our green bin, so some composting wastes have been put in there with the grass clippings (lettuce is just big grass). The guy on the green bins seemed OK with this, saying they never check unless it is large bits of wood anyway. So more "leafy" recyclable food waste will go in the green bin. (Wet rather than soiled organic nappies have also been "tested" in this manner for emergency disposals if points 1) and 3) ever fail.
3) We've set up a "collective" our road. Clive (single man 90) used to only put his small black bin out every 4 weeks. He has applied for a large bin and leaves a little red ribbon on it to indicate there is space so we use that. A few other neighbours have got into this spirit as well, one joking suggesting he sets up a website www.warringtonbinsha
re.co.uk - keep your eyes open).
With the above, we managed not to put our black bin out this week. We've recovered energy from cardboard, magazines, oils, batteries, clothes, plastics packaging (make sure your normal fire is burning well and only put small amounts on, making sure the fumes are fully drawn up the stack).
What we have worked out of course and I don't know if the bins lorries weigh what they collect is we've just spread capacity about between bins on the road between high / low use neighbours so nominally the same waste is going to landfiull anyway - except that being burnt - obviously there is some cold ash which goes back in the black bin as well.
