Half marathon date set for September

The race starts from Victoria Park The race starts from Victoria Park

GET set for the half marathon after organisers confirmed the event will return to the town on September 8.

The Spire Healthcare English Half Marathon has attracted runners from all over the UK and overseas and is set for its fifth year with organisers promising it will be ‘bigger and better than ever before’.

Rob Griffiths, event director, said: "As soon as last years race finished we struck into action to develop our 2013 vision.

“We have reached out to many of our runners and local stakeholders to understand what type of event people want.

“It is now very much becoming a race for the people, designed by the people."

Early bird entrants can sign up for £20 in February and organisers hope this year’s event will include the whole town.

Mr Griffiths said: "A key focus this year will be getting out into the community - encouraging people to run, encouraging local causes to use the event to enable fundraising and making the whole town to line the streets to support the inspirational runners."

Visit english-half.co.uk to sign up or community groups or charities who want more information can call Rob Griffiths on 07952 965084.

Another disruption to the traffic in Warrington then? Will there be as many complaints at for the Traveller Funeral earlier this year?

It's not ideal but it's a few hours on a Sunday in September. The benefits outweigh the disruptions. Thousands raised for local and national, community spirits raised. The runners themselves will benefit from the months of training and the achievement of the final run.

People can choose to not drive, take another route or just do something else on this day.

Would be daft to complain really, what's the point? This is a positive event.

Not a positive event for everyone, and particularly not for those who have to use public transport even on a Sunday!

well said mummy2010 . Sac do you already know the planned route and what section of public transport will be affected ? Or is it just an assumption that public transport will be affected so much on that day that is not a positive event worth having.

To those complaining... get a grip,
I for one have signed up for this years run and think its great of the organisers to organise it..
The route is known and put out for everyone to see (if they can be bothered looking rather than moaning) its early sunday morning, why not give your support to those that are taking part - you may even enjoy it if you try!!!

The route generally takes in the back roads to the south, brings in a bit of cash to the local economy, and raises the profile of Warrington, whats wrong with that?

Good point about people out training and getting fit, if everyone in the town embraced this sort of thing we probably would have all the rubbish going on that fills up SAC's day by whining about it all

Is there anything you dont complain about SAC, anything at all, when was the last time you had a positive comment about anything?

Why negativity? Its about people being healthy, exercising, acheiving their goals and raising much needed money for local and national charities. Its Sunday morning when roads are at their quietest and avoids town centre roads and major routes for cars to cause as little disruption as possible. The turnout and support from the local residents and businesses is amazing and this event is something all Warrantonians should be proud of ! I will be taking part for the 4th time as I love this event and appreciate all the organising it takes! Good luck runners and thank you organisers and supporters !

Loved running this last year and will be doing it again this year. What a great way to spend a September, Sunday morning - running a half marathon in your home town. Hopefully, it'll inspire others to do it in future years. There are far more more positives to this event than negatives ...... Come and support it by either running it or cheering us on!

There are positive and negative aspects of any event like the one mentioned. Such things are not universally accepted. For some people are actually not interested in such displays of human endurance however you tart it up. We all have a right to our own opinions. Additionally, make assumptions about me and they will, more than likely, be wrong. Could you please just stick to the point at issue in future!

Here we go again...is there nothing that some people won't take an opportunity to whinge and moan about?!

This is a brilliant event that the whole town can get involved in and be proud of! The disruption will be minimal, any road closures are always marked clearly with diversions and the matrix signs around affected areas display warnings weeks before the event.

I'm entered in this years event for the first time and look forward to the support and encouragement of the people of my town.

This is a huge event for Warrington; people travel from around the country and even abroad to participate. We should use this opportunity to raise the profile of Warrington and show everyone what a great town this is (moaners aside!)

Perhaps SAC could use his energy in a positive way and get out on the streets to support us and help us raise as much money as we can for LOCAL charities? Or even put his best foot forward and enter himself? Or, if he can't be bothered doing either, then please leave those of us who can to get on with it!

I'd use this medium to ask as many people as possible to join in with this event or take to the streets on race day to cheer us all on - it promises to be a great day!

This may come as a sunrise! The majority of Warrington residents in all probability will not in the slightest be interested, will probably have much better things to do, and totally ignore the event that you are so besotted with. Again you also make a lot of inaccurate assumptions. You have no idea what my gender is, my physical state or how I positively spend my time. Your comments would be more credible if you stick to the point at issue instead of moaning, yes you moaning, about me!

rachf says...

I apologise if we assumption as to your gender has offended you SAC - it was just you sounding like a grumpy old man that did it!

The point of your original comment was the disruption to traffic in Warrington I believe - the story above does not even mention any road closures; it doesn't even mention any details of the route! Should you wish to view the route, it is available on the EHM website.

What I was trying to get across that this is a positive event for Warrington -if you are not minded to support it then that's absolutely fine, each to their own.

I am somewhat confused with your assumption that I am in some way 'besotted' with this event? I am extremely proud of myself for having trained for it and had the guts to enter - for that I make no apologies!

I understand from others that you a habitual 'moaner' on this site and seem to find pleasure in leaving negative and derisive comments but please don't try and put a negative spin on this special event for those of us who have worked our backsides off to take part in.

This will be my first year taking part and in the past it has cause little disruption to south Warrington. I think SAC is forgetting the benefits this run will give to the whole of Warrington, runners from all over the country will be coming benefitting our economy.

I think you (SAC) need to think about your comments again.

I am a regular commentator on this site and my comments on other issues have been balanced between the positive and the negative. I don't recognise that I am a habitual moaner as you and your cohorts imply. Endure your self induced pain and your fanatical endeavours, but spare a thought for those that you and the others taking part will inflict on the public who will be affected.

Disruption of people's lives? Hardly! It will be a few hours on a Sunday. Traffic will be diverted. People will have PLENTY of notice.

Its great to see so much support the event.

In terms of road closures etc - this will be the 5th year of the event and on the whole we have a good relationship with residents and businesses impacted by the race. We are always open for a conversation on how to do things better and will not rest on our laurels.

Many thanks for all those who have commented both positively and not so positively - it really helps us develop a great event for the town.

Regards

Rob Griffiths

I'll just leave you and your cohorts to have your blinkered view, in your own little worlds of selfish individualism. Bleat on as much as you like, and extol your right of free speech! I actually do not have to agree with it! If the Half Marathon was confined to Victoria Park and the Old Warps then I would not perceive there being any problems with that.

OneLastTime says...

I don't know of a running event of 10k or above around Warrington which doesn't disrupt the traffic. I don't hear about the people of Manchester complaining when their city centre is hit by 40,000 runners. We should take this opportunity as a positive indication of where this town is heading. As I've said before runners from all over the country will be coming which will have a positive impact on the towns economy.
Also are you forgetting about the thousands of pounds which will be raised for charity?
I think it clearly outweighs any road closures which will happen. Lets be honest though the road closures are hardly in the busiest of places, on some of the roads you can run down them on a weekday without a single car passing. So I dont think it will disrupt anybody, there are plenty other roads which people can take.
