THE high street has suffered another blow as HMV’s administrators confirmed today the Golden Square music shop was among store closures.

Nine members of staff are set to lose their jobs over the next one to two months as the Warrington unit was identified as one of 66 ‘loss making’ stores in the country.

No fixed date has been set for the Warrington closure which will continue to trade in the meantime.

Nick Edwards, joint administrator, said: “As part of our ongoing review of HMV’s financial position, we have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss making stores for closure.

“This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’ future as a going concern.

“We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period.”

Administrators were appointed on January 15 this year.

The news follows town centre photo shop Jessops closing and film rental store Blockbusters, which has three stores in Warrington, going into administration.

loss its always packed to the point its annoying. maybe if HMV had priced there stock competitively this would never of happened.

How can they possibly compete with companies that don't have the same overheads & just trade from a massive warehouse & a minimum number of staff. Well done all the internet shoppers. How many of your friends relative & neighbours out of work?

I like to shop in store, I like to see what I want to buy and not look at a picture of it,
High rents dont help, Council tax and business rates on top.

The high street is vanishing due to shopping preferences or so we are told, I dont believe a word of it.

It's not just the fact people buy online that's caused the demise of HMV,there are other factors as well, so you can't blame Internet shopping, other businesses seem to prosper with online shopping, and yes that includes me

Warrington market and Bridge street were deserted last Saturday afternoon. Its a depressing place to be, nearly all of the shops have vanished on Bridge street, Every shop from Mcdonalds down to Friars Gate Is empty. Nobody has any reason to leave Golden Sq. I think supermarkets have a lot to answer for but then so does WBC for allowing so many of them. As for HMV, i think its a victim of poor forwards thinking.

Its very easy to blame "internet shopping" but its not as simple as that. If it were then no shop would exist anywhere on the high street. Some of the big names that have gone recently had their own internal issues....financial, pricing, branding, business model etc. Some of them IMHO, relied too much on "we are xxxxxxx, and we have been around for xx years". I shop on the high street, BUT will I pay twice the price for an item just because it came from a shop or pay an extra 25% just because this shop is not a supermarket.

There is the old retail saying that the customer is always right.......business
es that fail simply don't know or cannot provide what their customers want.

Where would you go if you wanted to buy a cd or dvd? Asda or Tescos. You wouldn't drive into town, park in the multi-storey just to buy a cd/dvd. Unfortunate but true. This is why most shops on the high street are closing down, in small towns especially. Meat, clothes, bread, electrical items...all available at your supermarket giant. They just can't compete. Such a shame.
