ICY roads and some snow caused hazardous conditions for motorists driving to work this morning.

Long queues developed across town with some drivers seeing driving times increase to an hour through Grappenhall.

The roads around the town centre are also more congested than usual.

An accident close to the Brian Bevan Island provide particularly problematic for drivers coming from the south of town.

A council spokesman said gritters had been out and about on the roads last night.

The vehicles went out at 10pm on Monday and again at 7.30am on Tuesday.

She added that the problems in Warrington were made worse by drivers diverting through the town because of an accident on the M62 where traffic was cut to one lane.

The weather is expected to warm up later in the day with rain forecast for the afternoon.
