Prisoner -took his own life' - inquest hears

Risley Prison where David Corrigan died Risley Prison where David Corrigan died

THE jury at an inquest of an inmate who was found hanged in his cell at Risley prison have returned the verdict he took his own life.

David Corrigan, who was described as ‘happy go-lucky’, had left a suicide note and killed himself days after receiving a letter from his wife’s solicitor starting divorce proceedings in April 2011.

Prison staff and inmates said they were all left stunned by Mr Corrigan’s death and the 26-year-old had not talked to anyone about the letter.

Mr Corrigan, who was born in Hartlepool, met and married his wife Susan, a student nurse, during his time in prison in Doncaster while she was visiting her brother.

He was sent to Risley for breaking his probation conditions following his release.

The inquest heard Mr Corrigan cut himself three times before hanging himself and was not on a list of inmates who needed to be monitored regularly overnight.
