CHESHIRE’s Police and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, has sparked anger by suggesting officers facing wage cuts are lucky not to be working for troubled retail chain HMV.

Labour’s defeated candidate for the PCC role John Stockton criticised Mr Dwyer after he made the comments in a radio interview.

Asked by BBC Radio Merseyside whether he thought £4,000 cuts to police starting salaries undervalued recruits, Mr Dwyer, aged 62, said: “Every day you face new challenges and I think that’s the attraction to the job and it’s why I don’t think a reduction in pay will actually reduce the number of applications.

“We’ve got to understand we’re in very tight times and at least we’re not working for HMV, are we? Our officers still have a job.”

Labour’s Mr Stockton said: “Mr Dwyer’s comments are indicative of a Conservative Party that expects the police to accept a 20 per cent cut in their overall budget, but at the same time expects them to deliver the same level of policing and reduce crime.”

He added: “Mr Dwyer should think very carefully about how his comments will be received by Cheshire’s police, because they will only serve to further undermine the morale of an already stretched service.”

Clarifying his position, Mr Dwyer said he had not compared the role of a police officer to working in a store.

“The news received at HMV and other large organisations that they face job losses must be taken very seriously and I feel for the people in that awful position as I am sure many police officers with relatives and friends facing redundancy do.”

Brain in gear before opening mouth - is always a good policy for those in public office to adopt, pity so few do.

This country continues to fall further into the economic mire thanks to the ideological fiscal policies of a government of millionaire public school boys.

Well he's alright sat on a huge 2/3rds final salary, lump sum and now c£60,000 per year on top....!!
Why does he need a salary over 3x that of a police officer!!

The Police Commissioner was supposed to be in town yesterday, complete with exhibition van parked up outside Golden Square.

No sign of the van - was the van nicked or is he that he just couldn't be bothered?

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

Perhaps Mr Dwyer would like to consider taking a 20% pay cut and consider himself very lucky to have a job at all,
After all he only got 5% of the vote in the election for the job.

He is not a crime boss, He is a conservative moron who imagines that we cant live without him, The problem is that he believes his own hype,

“We’ve got to understand we’re in very tight times

So why raise his precept?

Sack some of his hangers on from the "defunct" authority all of whom seem to have transferred without any jobs being advertised.

Is this legal?

Typical attitude from someone who earns a good wage, our police are out there putting their lifes on line as we found out few months back but he seems to think that cutting their wages but still doing same job is acceptable. I would say their wages need to be increased by 20% not decreased
