Deaf charity calls for GPs to speak more clearly

A DEAF charity is calling on GPs in the town to speak more clearly when dealing with patients with hearing loss after research found 28 per cent of respondents had been unclear about their diagnosis during an appointment.

Action on Hearing Loss said patients blamed misunderstandings after doctors did not face them or speak clearly.

Paul Breckell, chief executive, said: “It’s disappointing that many people with hearing loss have difficulty understanding vital health advice because GPs aren’t meeting individual communication needs.

“Simple changes can provide a much better service for patients who are deaf or hard of hearing and help avoid unnecessary follow-up appointments or the risk of exacerbated poor health.”

Speaking clearly will NOT help someone deaf. It will only assist an lip-reader, currently it is only 30% effective, if following a 3rd of what your GP says suits you.... AOHL is an Hard of hearing charity we must be clear it DOESN'T talk about access for the profound deaf patient it has no mandate or membership to do that.. Deaf access must be provided by trained professionals.
