Risley prisoner 'could have been left dead for eight hours' - inquest hears

Risley Prison where David Corrigan died Risley Prison where David Corrigan died

A PRISONER who was found hanged in his cell at Risley prison could have been dead for eight hours before staff found him, an inquest has heard.

The jury at Warrington Coroner’s Court were told this week David Corrigan, who was born in Hartlepool, had left a suicide note and killed himself less than a month after his wife had told him she wanted a divorce in April 2011.

The 26-year-old had met Susan Corrigan through her brother, who was in prison in Doncaster with Mr Corrigan, after seeing a picture in the cell and asking if he could write to her.

Following a ‘stormy’ two year relationship, Mr Corrigan was sent to Risley for breaking his probation conditions when he received a solicitor’s letter regarding divorce proceedings.

He had previously told Mrs Corrigan he was in Doncaster prison for assaulting someone outside a nightclub.

Prison staff described a ‘considerable amount’ of blood in the cell as Mr Corrigan had tried to cut himself three times before hanging himself.

He had been on anti-depressants but was not on a list of inmates who needed to be monitored regularly overnight.

The inquest continues.

It is a total tragedy, his mother will likely never recover from the loss of her ONLY beloved son at such a young age esp since she also suffered the loss of her husband a few weeks later..This has devastated her and his little girl.
All sympathies to Davids mum n daughter..

He may not have been deserving of a knighthood or the sort of mini state funeral the police helped to give that dead traveller this week but he was still a human being and, at 27, this is a waste of a human life it is and a tragedy to his friends and loved ones.

The fact that he was in prison shows that he wasn't a nice guy

At the end of the day, whatever he was in prison for,he is somebody's son,and I would have thought being on anti depressants, and (am I right in thinking the prison service would have read his mail beforehand). So I would have thought putting the two together maybe he should have been on watch.I don't know the family, but must be devastating for them.

The prison service have a duty of care, He may not have been on suicide watch but if he was on anti-depressants they should have kept an eye on him no matter what he was in prison for, People make mistakes and are punished for them but that doesnt make him any less human. My sympathy,s go to his mother and daughter,

There really is no need for people to speak ill about some poor person who has died in this way.
