Bone and joint surgery to take place in Runcorn

PATIENTS in the town will now have their bone and joint surgery in Runcorn as routine orthopaedic surgery moves from Warrington Hospital.

Staff have been moving into the new Cheshire and Merseyside Treatment Centre at Runcorn’s Halton General Hospital over the Christmas week after the building was taken over by the Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Mel Pickup, chief executive, said: “The move protects orthopaedic surgery from the risk of cancellations due to emergency work and frees up capacity at Warrington Hospital so that we can focus on trauma care and other services there.”

Exceptions to the move include emergency trauma orthopaedic work, children’s orthopaedic surgery and cases where a patient might need critical care support after surgery which will remain at Warrington.

Outpatient clinics will also still be run at Warrington.

I want to make people aware that there is no ITU facilities at Halton & if any patient is unfortunate enough to require emergency intervention they will have to be transferred under blue light back to Warrington hospital, also there is no full time doctors on duty, in future if I need any orthopedic surgery I will consider my options of where to go

This is why pre-ops are undertaken to determine your level of risk. If you are a high risk patient you will not be sent there for a procedure. You will have your options under choose and book but I can see fit and healthy patients going to Runcorn.

As "old-codger" states, it most certainly was a nice clean unit with friendly experienced staff. And was actually rated in the top 10 hospitals in the country for cleanliness and excellence. This was however, when it was run by Interhealth Care Services Ltd. It's now run by Warrington Hospital so will basically be like being in Warrington Hospital...... except its in Halton. It will be Warrington Hospital staff, not the friendly Interhealth staff and run to Warrington Hospital's standards and protocols.
It's like your favourite Chinese restaurant being taken over by new owners......... it will never live up to the standard.

Is Helen Jones on holiday? This is just the thing that Labour use to start scare-mongering.

this has left me wondering if the waiting times for surgery will be reduced?? way back in July 2012 I was advised I required "URGENT" spinal surgery, and after repeated calls to the waiting list clerks and numerous letters from my GP, my outstanding surgery is still "urgent" and I still am living an existence with daily pain. My fear is that the transfer will slow the waiting list times down as the staff get used to the new hospital and operating theatre.
I must say though when I have had treatment in Halton I have been treated with respect and kindness, so am looking forward to having my outstanding surgery there eventually!!
