A LIBERAL Democrat proposal to come up with ideas to improve local communities using the powers of the Sustainable Communities Act has been greeted with cross-party support at Warrington Borough Council.

The act was originally passed in Parliament in 2007 but was modified earlier this year to make it easier for councils and communities to put forward ideas to improve the quality of life and well-being in their local areas.

Lib Dem Group leader Clr Ian Marks (LD - Lymm) said: “There is no limit as to how creative we can be. Examples of proposals put forward elsewhere are keeping a post office open, giving rate relief to local shops and capping the number of bookmakers in an area. I am not saying that any of these are necessarily suitable for Warrington but it gives a flavour of what can be done.”
