WARRINGTON could be heading for fortnightly bin collections for general waste to save almost £1 million a year.

The council’s executive board is set to discuss the future of bin collections in the borough at a meeting on Monday and the recommendations call for alternative weekly collections for recyclable waste one week and general waste the following week.

At a full council meeting yesterday Clr Celia Jordan (LD - Stockton Heath) asked: “Is the council planning to change from weekly to two weekly collections?”

But Clr David Keane (LAB - Penketh and Cuerdley), executive board member for environment and public protection, remained tightlipped replying: “This council is considering options for the future collection of all waste. A report will be considered at the next meeting of the executive board.”

The report, which has been released today, recommends that due to the council’s budgetary position it needs to move to an alternative weekly collection.

It says it will save the council £900,000 a year if the change goes ahead.
