FOR months it has been rumoured but this week it was finally revealed bargain retail giant Primark is coming to town.

Happy shoppers flooded the Warrington Guardian Facebook and Twitter pages with comments after the news broke the fashion store was set to open in the Golden Square in April 2013.

Ian Cox, general manager at the shopping centre, said: “Shoppers have wanted to see a Primark in the town for a long time now and this is not only great news for them but for the whole of the town.

“Primark will be a superb addition to the top brands that already help bring tens of thousands of visitors to Golden Square every week.”

The former Littlewoods store and the existing New Look store will merge to house the new 56,000 sq ft Primark store which will stock womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and homeware. New Look will move into the former Zara store, near H&M, within the shopping centre in early 2013.

Warrington Borough Council leader Clr Terry O’Neill said: “This is a brilliant boost for the local economy. “The announcement shows that big business has confidence in our town and we are thrilled that Primark has finally made the move.

“Retailers investing in Warrington is key to the lifeblood of the town and we hope that Primark’s arrival will enhance our existing offer even further.”

A poll on the Warrington Guardian website found 73% of readers could not wait for the new store to open with comments including “Bring it on” from Joanne Kenwright. Jdow added on our website: “Littlewoods has been closed for years and people of Warrington have been after a Primark for years it will bring money to Warrington rather than going to Manchester or Liverpool.”

While Facebook fan Collette Griffiths’ only complaint was the location. She said: “It’s just a shame it has gone in the old Boots store on Bridge St as originally rumoured to add some life back to the forgotten part of town centre.”
