RESIDENTS were evacuated from a retirement home in Lymm early today, Thursday following a fire in a ground floor flat.

The alarm was raised shortly before 6am at Raven Court on Pepper Street.

Fire, ambulance and police were called to help 16 residents, some in wheelchairs, get out of the building.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally in one of the ground floor flats of the Warrington Housing Association property.

Nobody was taken to hospital but the residents, all aged over 55, were checked by ambulance staff for smoke inhalation.

The male living in the flat where the fire started was rescued by firefighters.
